My Last Day

These two weeks have gone by so fast. It is amazing to think back and see all what i have done and learned in these two weeks. Today. i was able to sit in on the Medical Digital Library Meeting with Daniel Dollar and the rest of the staff. They basically tossed back ideas on what new methods they can use to improve their current status. Then i had the webmaster orientation with Hongbin which was real interesting and fun. During the meeting, Dr. Greenberg was able to take pictures of both me and him in the process. Later on i had a meeting with John Gallagher, who works with the access/delivery services. Our meeting was very informative because he gave me a tour of the library from his perspective and how things are conducted. Overall, I had so much fun at this internship and i wish i could return next year. I just want to say thank you very much to the staff for all being so warm and lending your time to meet with me. Also, a special thank you to Dr. Greenberg for choosing me for this internship. This experience was amazing.

My day began with a meeting with Bob Hughes and Betty. They work at the library administration office and they gave me an insight to everything that they do. Bob explained to me how he works on managing the money and the grants that they receive. As well as also giving me insight as to how the internship i am curretly enrolled in is being funded . It is through a partnership with Johns Hopkins University, and that was very interesting to know. Then Betty told me briefly about how she deals with the money, which was really exciting. Then i met with Mrs Kenny Marone, who by far was the most exciting person to talk to. She was really nice and not only did she tell me about her job but she really asked me questions concerning me and my school work background. My meeting at the EPH was cancelled, so i had more time to work on the assignment i was assigned to by Daniel Dollar.

Second Week

The day was very productive. I came in about two hours early so i was able to work more on the assignment i was given by Daniel Dollar. I re-did the blog page and put up new posts. I was aslo able to do some reseach for Dr. Greenberg. I attended two classes today taught by Dr. Greenberg and they were based on using OVID Medline as well as Refworks. I was able to take alot of information from the classes. It is one that will benefit me later on in my future. It sad that this is my last week here. If only the internship ran for an entire month.

Annual Staff Meeting

Today was the annual staff meeting and I got the opportunity to attend. The annual yearly report gives the library staff and overview if the previous year and what is to come in the future. They discussed electronic resources and how much money was spent as well as saved in the past year. Ms. Marone gave an overview on everything and touched on all the subjects including the medical school giving more funds to the library. They also talked about how the library will be receiving some renovation in the coming year. After the meeting, we came out to lunch which was really nice and the food was also really good. That gave me an opportunity to talk more with new staff members that I just met. I also met Holly and her baby girl Betsy which was real nice. The meeting went well.

I had about three meetings today and each of them was very exciting. I met with Lei, who was the creator of the Library Tutorial 101, which happens to be on the homepage on the library’s website. He asked me for my feedback about the tutorial considering that I got the chance to watch it my first day. Working with him on the tutorial was very important because his tutorial is one that is designed to relate to a person in my age range and getting my opinion on it was helpful to him. We discussed both the pro and the con about the tutorial and the upgrades that could be made to it. I also was able to get a tour of the sub-basement level with Sarah, who works with Reservation. Her job is basically to help upkeep the really old books in the library, texts that date back to the 15th century and most texts which belong to Harvey Cushing himself. She explained to me the history behind all the books and how much progress she has made to the books and even the entire upkeep. It was really fun today getting one on one time with a member of the staff and having them explain to me what they do.

My first day

Today was my first day as an intern at The Cushing/Whitney Library. I was so nervous and also very anxious to see what awaited me in the building. When I arrived, I was able to meet all the staff members such as Lei, Jan and Jeanne as well as Dr. Greenburg who gave me a tour of the library. There were so many interesting facts about this library. Facts such as it is rated the 5th largest library containing so many useful medical books both new and old text. I also got to meet the staff in the basement level of the library. I spent about 30-45miuntes with Earl, Mary and Daniel as they all explained to me what there jobs entail. I was also able to work at my own desk and help Daniel with online subscription. I was also introduced to the blogs as well as meebo, which is an online aim that staff members use to keep in touch via internet. Towards the end of the day, I walked over to meet Jeanne at the Yale School of Nursing, where she was able to give me a brief overview of her job both at the library and at Yale University School of Nursing. My first was real thrilling and enlightening.

Today is my last day. First I attended a Web Advisory meeting. During the meeting the staff discussed changes that should be made to the Medical Library website. One problem they are having is trying to advertise Yale Links. They have decided to have a contest. Contestants must create a video on YouTube to promote Yale Links. They are deciding what the prize should be. One idea is to make the prize an Ipod; however many people already have Ipods. After this, I meet with Hongbin Liu and he told me about his job.

The first thing I did today was meet with Kenny Marone. We talked about college and she told me about her job, Then I met with Lei. We discussed learning styles and the Library Tutorial 101. He asked me a lot of questions about what would make the web pages for the Library Tutorial easier for people to understand. For example, if a person was not familiar with the Medical Library or a particular program on the Medical Library website, would they know where to go to find help. He also asked me if the layout of the website would make a difference to help users search for information. After this I met with Bob, He is in charge of paying bills and cashing checks that come to the Library. Relatives of Harvey Cushing came to visit the Library, so I was not able to met with the Historical Library Staff. However, Toby did give a me a small tour of the Historical Library. She showed me a few of Harvey Cushing's books and personal items. She also showed me a few of the rare books from he 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. They were absolutely beautiful; the color in the books were amazingly preserved. Around 3:00 pm mary, Melissa and I took a suttle to the Sterling Library from the Ice Cream social. It was really fun and the ice was good. However, the weather was too hot for me,

Today I arrived early so I worked on my blog. Then I met with Mr. Greenberg at the reference desk. He explained to me how things work at the desk. Then he gave me a book with different titles of journals from the 17th and 18th century. I choose to read Archives of Dermatology: Skin and Veneral Diseases. In order to view the journal you have to use a computer-like machine called MicroSP2000. The journals are on what is called Micro film. It was really cool and the information in the journal was I read was very interesting. After this, I had a class which was taught by Mr. Greenberg. In the class I learned how to use a program called RefWorks. Refworks is software that enables you to collect references for books, journals articles, etc. into a personal database. It can also be used to generate bibliographies in different formats such as MLA and APA. Then I went over to the Sterling Library and met Sharon Tarascio. She was very nice. During our meeting she asked me questions about my internship. We also talked about college.

Today I met with Mark and he showed me a device called a PDA, which stands for Personal Digital Assistant. Its really an amazing device. Not only can you check your email, you can play games, and use it to do research. The device has programs called Labman, Epocrates, and MedCal. All of these programs are used by health care providers to make their jobs easier. MedCal for example is a program that can take a patient's weight, height, and age and determine how much medication they need. The device can be found at www.palm.com. Mark also showed me a book called the Guide to Inpatient Medicine. This book describes common medical problems such as
anemia, renal failure, and vasculitis. After my meeting with Mark, I ate lunch and then started on my next activity. My next activity was to go to http://www.med.yale.edu/library/education/software.html and see which educational programs were accessible to the public and which programs required a Yale id. Some of the programs include: Brainstorm,Abdomen Quiz, and Clinical Human Embryology. I was able to use some of the programs.

* The Cushing Whitney Medical Library has Licensed Applications (free to Yale University/YNHH affiliates) for those who own PDA's.

Today is my second day interning at the Yale Medical Library. First I attended a meeting where the employees shared everything they were doing up to date. Then i met with Jane. She told me about her job. There is a classroom where students can come and learn how to use different web browsers for research and how to make citations using programs such as Refworks. There are classes where anyone can attend and other classes where a professor may request private classes for his or her students. Another type of class includes an integrated classroom setting. I got the chance to read a few thesis statements from former Yale Nursing School Students. A few of them included:The Nurse-Midwife Patient Relationship and Nurse- Midwifes use of Universal Precautions, Do Race and Ethnicity influence Perceptions of Health Care Practitioners, and the Integration of African Americans at the Yale University of Nursing. After I read them Charles Greenberg and I walked over to the School of Nursing. There I met Janene Batten. She was in the middle of a meeting about cost management so are time was very brief but she was a very nice lady and she gave me a lot of information about her job.

My first day

Today was the first day of my internship at the Cushing Whitney Medical Library. Charles Greenberg gave me a tour of the library. I was surprised to see how big the library was. I have a feeling I am going to get lost at least once. Charles Greenberg told me about the history of the library. I met a few of the employees and they showed me what they did. Their names were Daniel, Mary and Earl. They were all very interesting, and each of them have a specific job. Daniel was responsible for going through the mail that came to the library and deciding which journals the library was going to purchase. This may seem easy, but it is not. First he had to see which journals were viewed the most and then he had to see if the price of the journals fit into the library's budget. Mary was responsible for taking the old journals and getting them ready to be bound into hardcover books. Earl was responsible for a program called SFD ( I'm not sure if that is correct).

Steven's Last Entree

My last day was my worst day because it was the last. The highlight of
this day was giving feedback to Lei about the tutorials on the Yale
website. This was a highlight for me because reviewing the tutorials is
similar to one of my dream jobs which is a game reviewer/tester/editor.
My two weeks as an intern were awesome and I really wouldn't mind doing
it again. This might not be my last blog so keep your eyes open.

July 25, 2007 (Steven)

Today was a great day. The first thing I did was go to the Sterling Library to speak with Sharon Tarascio. She asked me questions about how I felt about the internship. Through this conversation I ended up kind of getting a job opportunity. That really throw my day into an excellent day. The next thing I did was find out about what exactly was Bob's main purpose in the library. Overall he's in charge of the financials. Then I found out a lot more about the historical part of the library. This was one of the first times that I actually enjoyed learning about history. A got to see books, paintings and posters that date as far back as the 1400s. Thats all for today.

July 23, 2007 (Steven)

On this day I had two things on the list to do. The first was an education software activity with Judy. What I did was find out what her main roll and involvement is with the Library home page. Then I actually took part in doing what she does which was making sure the links are properly working, Find out which ones don't and why. The second thing I did was find out what happens in the Collection Development department. On the outside it doesn't look like much until one actually take part in doing what they do. What I did was start a spread sheet that was used to see which links give you full texts to Journals, ones that don't, ones that say they do and don't and viseversa(I never actually had to spell this word before). Overall It was fun.

My third day (Steven)

My third day at the chili internship. The first thing I did today was go to a meeting that involved the game Jeopardy being played. That was the first time that I was able to say that the game Jeopardy wasn't a game at all. It was a learning experience. It was also fun at the same time. The second thing that I did was meet the library director. I found out that there is definately a lot of money involved with the medical library. The next thing that was on my list informed me a lot about PDAs. There is a lot of uses for them especially when one is always on the move. Then it was time for lunch. I walked down to Subway and got me a six inch chicken teriyaki(probably spelt wrong) sub. It was good especially with the formula 50 vitamin water. After lunch I started the PubMed tutorial. I learned how its used to research things. After I'm finished that I did this blog. When I'm finished I'll check my my, possibly look for something else to do, change my calender and then probably go home.

Today is my second day... (Steven)

Today is my second day interning at the Yale Medical Library. The first thing that I did was go to a meeting where some of the employees shared what they have been doing for the past couple of weeks. During this meeting I recognize some similarities between their meeting and the meetings that I was having working as a manager for the Career school based company called CCS. There seemed to be a lot of planning involved, and also its good to know that everybody's doing their part. This leads me to the fact that I learned a lot about the employees' personalities from just one meeting. After I left the meeting, I learnt more about the access and delivery services department from John Gallagher and a couple of people that his job descriptions requires him to work with to get things done. Some of it is dealing with the usual shelving of books. The thing that was somewhat completely new to me was how the go about sending information from books and whanot electronicly. As of now the day is still not over.

Introduction- Steven

Today is my first day working as an intern at the medical library. It was a lot more interesting than those before me said it was. I learned some history about not only the medical library but also the yale school of nursing.
